The internet has made life easier in so many ways, but it has also presented some challenges. People type things from behind their keyboards that they would never dare to say in real life. In fact, some people go so far that their words could be considered harassment. Do you feel as though you are being harassed by someone online? Here are a few tips to adhere to as you deal with this situation.
DO NOT: Retaliate
If someone calls you names online, you might be tempted to defend yourself by retaliating and saying something even more insulting back. But regardless of who started it, this won't bode well for you if you end up filing harassment charges against this person. They could turn around and claim that you were harassing them, too! It's okay to politely defend yourself. For example, you could say "Sorry, that's just not the case. You're mistaken." But do not go any further than that.
DO: Keep a record of all communications.
It can be hard to look back over messages and comments that insult you and say mean things. But you need to keep records of these communications so your have proof of the harassment. Taking screenshots is usually the easiest way to keep track. Make sure the time and date is present in the screenshot. This way, even if the harassing individual takes down their comments, you have proof of them to show a lawyer.
DO NOT: Encourage friends to defend you.
While your friends may be angry and want to defend you, they should stay quiet, too. It's far too easy for one of them to get worked up and accidentally say something that could be taken as harassment. Many people who harass others online are very savvy about the legal system and may be waiting specifically for someone to retaliate against them so they know you can't build a legal case.
DO: Talk to a harassment lawyer ASAP.
Don't wait and hope this gets better on its own. Harassment online can quickly escalate. The individual may move towards harassing you in person, or they might encourage others to harass you, too. This can be damaging to your reputation and your ego. Contact a lawyer now so you can begin taking legal action. This will also give you the comfort that you are standing up to your harasser in some way, which is good for your mental health.
